My Hobey Baker Winner Prediction?

The "Hobey Hat Trick" (final three candidates) was announced moments ago. The Hobey Baker Memorial Award is given to the best college hockey player in the nation. In addition to great statistics, leadership, scholarship, and service are important to the selection process. This year, the Hobey Hat Trick consist of:

1. Matt Carle, defenseman from the University of Denver
2. Chris Collins, foward from the Boston College
3. Brian Elliot, goaltender from the University of Wisconsin

The popular consensus, almost by a landslide right now, is that Matt Carle will walk away with the award.

So who is my pick to win this year's Hobey Baker? The answer may surprise you.

I pick Chris Collins to win the Hobey Baker this season.

Now I know "a little" about Boston College hockey :-) I have seen Chris play a number of times, and it is quite amazing how the kid progressed throughout his four years. He has made himself into a human-highlight reel --"doin' it and doin' it well" as said by NECN's Chris Collins (different person, same name).

But that is only one reason why I want to see Chris win the Hobey Baker. Remember, Chris wears #12. However, that number was also worn by a great BC hockey player --by the name of Brian Gionta (now with the New Jersey Devils). Since Gionta graduated from BC in 2001, people have been screaming and calling to retire his name and the #12 to the rafters at Conte Forum. Unfortunately from what I have heard, your number can be retired only if you win the Hobey Baker, Heisman Trophy, or other prestigious national award. Now if Chris wins the Hobey Baker, it will be sure that BC hockey #12 will be retired to the rafters --with the name Chris Collins, rather than the name of Brian Gionta which most people associated #12 with! How hilarious would that be?
